Secondary Investigations:

For the female:

It is a non-invasive procedure done with no anesthesia required. Contrast media is injected intrauterine through the cervical canal in order to delineate the uterine cavity and both fallopian tube as well as to detect spillage and smearing of the contrast media into the pelvic cavity. Serial radiographs are taken in order to document the findings.

Examples of abnormalities are:

  • Irregular lining of the endometrial cavity (by fibroids or polyps).
  • Distension of the fallopian tubes.
  • Non spillage of the contrast media into the pelvic cavity (tubal blockage).
  • Persistent localized pelvic collections (pelvic adhesions).
