IMSI
Intracytoplasmic Morphologically
Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI)
IMSI is a modification of the ICSI technique where sperm samples are examined under an inverted light microscope with high power optics that achieves a magnification around 6000 times more powerful than standard microscope. This is performed to better assess the sperm “morphology” (shape). At this higher power the embryologist can choose the sperm with the best morphology to be injected in the oocytes.
“It is recommended in those with a history of recurrent implantation failures, recurrent ICSI failures or abnormal sperm shape.”
Although it is not yet confirmed to be of benefit for all IVF patients, it is recommended in those with a history of recurrent implantation failures, recurrent ICSI failures or severe teratospermia (abnormal sperm shape).
In essence it is a selection tool, to aid embryologists choose the optimal sperm for ICSI. If the sperm count or motility is already so low that it limits the number of sperm available for ICSI, IMSI may not be a suitable technique in such a case.
